Georgia Crime Victims Compensation Program
Georgia's Crime Victims Compensation Program, administered by the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, helps innocent victims of violent crime with certain out-of-pocket expenses. It can pay for medical bills, mental health counseling, funeral expenses, crime scene sanitization, and loss of income or support that resulted from the crime. The maximum award is generally $25,000 per victim per victimization, with category limits such as up to $15,000 for medical, up to $6,000 for funeral, up to $3,000 for counseling, up to $10,000 for lost wages, up to $10,000 for loss of support, and up to $1,500 for crime scene sanitization. Compensation is a payer of last resort after insurance and other sources.

How to apply
- Report the crime to law enforcement and cooperate with the investigation.
- Register and apply online through the Victims Compensation Portal at victimscompportal.cjcc.ga.gov, or download and complete a paper application from the CJCC website.
- Gather supporting documents, including the police report and proof of your expenses or losses.
- Submit the complete packet online or by mail to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, 104 Marietta Street NW, Suite 440, Atlanta, GA 30303.

Deadline: For crimes occurring on or after July 1, 2014, a claim must generally be filed within 3 years of the crime or the death of the victim. A victim who was a minor at the time of the crime may file until 3 years after turning 18. The board may extend the time to file for good cause.
