Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Program
State program that reimburses eligible victims of violent crime for out-of-pocket costs not covered by other sources. Covered expenses can include medical, hospital, and dental care, mental health counseling, loss of earnings, funeral and burial costs, crime scene cleanup, relocation costs, and replacement costs. The maximum award is up to $45,000 for crimes on or after August 7, 2022 (up to $27,000 for crimes before that date).

How to apply
- Report the crime to law enforcement (generally within 72 hours, or within 7 days for sexual assault, sexual abuse, or human trafficking; reasonable delays may be excused).
- Complete the application online through the Illinois Attorney General forms portal, or download the fillable application and submit it by email to CVA@ilag.gov.
- Call the Crime Victims Assistance Line at 1-800-228-3368 if you need help with the application or have questions.
- Keep records of your expenses and any insurance or other reimbursement, which the program will consider.
Deadline: Apply within 5 years of the date of the crime, or within 1 year after criminal charges are filed against the offender, whichever gives you more time (740 ILCS 45/6.1). (Fixed deadline)
