Indiana Violent Crime Victim Compensation Program (Crime Victim Compensation)
Indiana's crime victim compensation program reimburses innocent victims of violent crime, surviving family members of deceased victims, and people injured while preventing a crime for out-of-pocket costs not paid by other sources. Eligible expenses include medical bills, lost wages, mental health counseling (up to $3,000), and funeral, burial, or cremation expenses (up to $5,000). The program covers crimes that caused bodily injury in Indiana, and applicants must have at least $100 in out-of-pocket expenses.

- Get help from a victim advocate at a local victim service program or prosecutor's office, which can guide you through filing.
- File online through the Victim Compensation application linked from the ICJI Victim Compensation page.
- Or download the PDF application and mail or hand deliver it to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana Government Center South, 402 W. Washington Street, Room W469, Indianapolis, IN 46204, or fax it to 317-232-7103.
- Call the Victim Compensation Division toll-free at 1-800-353-1484 with questions about the program or your claim.
Deadline: File as soon as you can. An application should be filed within 180 days after the crime, and the program will not accept an application received more than two years after the crime. Late filing may be allowed in some circumstances, so apply even if time has passed and confirm your deadline with the program at 1-800-353-1484. (Fixed deadline)
Amount: Up to $15,000 may be available for medical and related expenses, with up to $3,000 for mental health counseling and up to $5,000 for funeral, burial, or cremation expenses.
