It is a payor of last resort, meaning it pays after insurance and other sources. It can help with reasonable medical care, mental health counseling, lost wages, loss of support, and funeral expenses. The maximum total award is $25,000, with sublimits including $7,500 for funeral and burial expenses, $5,000 for outpatient mental health counseling, and $10,000 for inpatient mental health treatment.

- Get the Crime Victims Compensation application (Declaration of Eligibility) from the Attorney General's website or by calling the program.

Deadline: Generally the crime must have been reported to law enforcement within 72 hours after its discovery and a claim filed within two years of the crime, and the board may waive timing requirements for good cause.
