Mississippi Crime Victim Compensation Program
The Crime Victim Compensation Program helps eligible victims of violent crime and certain family members with out-of-pocket, crime-related costs not covered by insurance or other sources. Covered expenses can include medical and dental care, mental health counseling, lost wages, funeral costs, domestic violence relocation and temporary housing assistance, and repair or replacement of damaged windows, locks, and doors. Property damage, pain and suffering, and attorney fees are not covered. The program is offender funded and also receives federal VOCA funds.
Who it is for
Innocent victims of violent crime in Mississippi, including survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and stalking, and qualifying family members or dependents; offenders, accomplices, people incarcerated when the crime occurred, and victims whose own conduct caused the injury are not eligible.

How to apply
- Report the crime to law enforcement within 72 hours of the crime, or be able to show good cause for not reporting.
- Get an application by calling the Victim Compensation Program at 800-829-6766 (statewide) or 601-359-6766 (local), or download it from the Attorney General's Bureau of Victim Assistance website.
- Applications are also available from the District Attorney's office, domestic violence shelters, rape crisis centers, and child advocacy agencies.
- Complete the application, attach itemized bills and supporting documentation, and mail it to the Crime Victim Compensation Program at the Office of the Attorney General.
- Cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation and prosecution and with the compensation program.
Deadline: The application must be received within 36 months (3 years) after the date of the crime. In cases of child sexual abuse, the application must be received within 36 months after the crime was reported or before the child's 25th birthday. For good cause, the director may extend the filing deadline by up to an additional 12 months for crimes occurring on or after July 1, 2007. (Fixed deadline)
Amount: Maximum total award is $20,000 per claim, with category limits such as up to $15,000 for medical expenses, up to $3,500 for mental health counseling, up to $2,000 one-time domestic violence relocation assistance, and up to $500 one-time domestic violence temporary housing assistance.
