South Carolina Crime Victim Compensation
The Department of Crime Victim Compensation reimburses eligible victims of violent crime in South Carolina for certain out-of-pocket costs that are not covered by other sources. It is a fund of last resort and may consider medical and dental care, counseling, lost wages or support, limited transportation, and funeral and burial expenses for a deceased victim.

Innocent victims of violent crime committed in South Carolina, and in some cases family members or those financially responsible for a victim, who have eligible expenses not covered by other sources.

How to apply
- Report the crime to local law enforcement; reporting and timing requirements apply and may be waived for good cause.
- Contact a local victim advocate for help with your claim, or download the application from the Department of Crime Victim Compensation page.
- Gather records of your expenses, such as medical bills, counseling bills, proof of lost wages or support, or funeral costs.
- Submit the completed application by mail to the Department of Crime Victim Compensation, or call 1-800-220-5370 (victims only) or 803-734-1900 for help.
Deadline: The program publishes a deadline to file a claim and a separate deadline to report the crime to law enforcement, both of which may be waived for good cause.
