Tennessee Criminal Injuries Compensation Program
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Program provides funds of last resort to financially assist innocent victims of violent crime in Tennessee. It can reimburse eligible costs not covered by other sources, including medical and dental expenses, mental health counseling, lost wages, funeral and burial costs, crime scene cleanup, and certain moving expenses. It is administered by the Tennessee Department of Treasury.
Who it is for
Innocent victims of violent crime committed in Tennessee, and in some cases their dependents or survivors, who incurred eligible expenses and did not contribute to the crime.

How to apply
- Report the crime to law enforcement, generally within 15 days unless the victim is a minor or there is good cause for delay.
- Cooperate fully with police and prosecution efforts.
- Gather records of your expenses, such as police reports, medical and counseling bills, proof of lost wages, or funeral costs.
- File your claim online through the program's application portal at treasury.tn.gov/injury, or call the program for help.
- Call the program at (833) 867-3891 or email criminal.injury@tn.gov with questions about eligibility or applying.
Deadline: A claim must generally be filed within two years of the date the crime occurred, unless good cause for a delay can be established. Confirm the current deadline with the program before relying on a date. (Fixed deadline)
Amount: For crimes occurring on or after July 1, 2025, the maximum award is $34,100, with sub-limits for certain expense types such as funeral and burial costs. Confirm current limits with the program.
