Virginia Victims Fund (Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund)
The Virginia Victims Fund, also known as the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund, reimburses innocent victims of crime in Virginia for reasonable and necessary expenses that are not paid by other sources. It can help with medical and counseling bills, lost wages, funeral and burial costs, temporary housing, crime scene cleanup, and home security improvements. It is a payer of last resort and does not cover stolen or damaged property or pain and suffering.

Innocent victims of crime committed in Virginia who suffered physical or emotional injury, and in some cases their dependents or surviving family members.

How to apply
- Report the crime to law enforcement promptly; in most cases the crime must be reported within 120 hours (5 days) unless there is good cause for the delay.
- Gather records of your expenses, such as medical bills, counseling bills, proof of lost wages, or funeral costs.
- Apply directly through the Virginia Victims Fund, or ask your local Victim/Witness Program to help you file the claim form.
- Submit supporting documents to your assigned examiner, who will review the claim and issue a decision you can accept or appeal.
Deadline: In most cases the application must be filed within one year of the crime, unless good cause for the delay is shown. Longer deadlines apply for victims who were minors, including extended deadlines for child sexual abuse. Confirm current deadlines with the Virginia Victims Fund before relying on a date.
