West Virginia Crime Victims Compensation Fund
The Crime Victims Compensation Fund reimburses innocent victims of crime for certain out-of-pocket costs when no other source of payment is available. Covered expenses can include medical and dental care, mental health counseling by a licensed counselor, lost wages, funeral and burial costs, and mileage to medical treatment. The crime generally must be reported to law enforcement within 96 hours unless good cause exists, and the victim must cooperate with law enforcement.

How to apply
- Request an application from the Crime Victims Compensation Fund by calling 1-877-562-6878 (within West Virginia) or 304-347-4851, or obtain one from a local county prosecuting attorney's office.
- Make sure the crime was reported to law enforcement, generally within 96 hours unless there is good cause for delay.
- Complete the application, gather documentation of your expenses, and file with the Fund. An attorney may help you and reasonable attorney fees are paid by the Fund at no cost to you regardless of outcome.
- File within the deadline: adults within two years of the crime; for a minor victim, before the minor's 20th birthday.

Amount: Up to $35,000 in most injury cases and up to $50,000 in cases involving death.
